Masssage Therapy
is a hands-on manipulation of the soft tissue and joints of the body. The soft tissues include muscle, skin, tendons and associated fascia, ligaments and joint capsules. It also is known to relieve high blood pressure. Massage has many diverse physiological effects, which are primarily due to the hands moving over the body. The different movements can physically stretch muscles, ligaments, tendons and fascia, encourage the circulation through the tissue, inhibit muscular spasms and be either sedating or stimulating to the nervous system. The therapeutic use of massage by a registered certified massage therapist affects all the systems of the body - in particular, the muscular, circulatory, lymphatic (immune) and nervous systems. No wonder so many people find massage therapy so helpful to them in so many ways!

Benefits of Massage Therapy:
Massage therapy is relaxing and it certainly feels good. But there are many benefits to massage which you may not be aware of. Massage increases blood supply, oxygen, and nutrition to muscles, tissue, joints, and the vital organs, and improves circulation throughout the body. This helps muscles to recover more quickly from exertion and fatigue (especially useful after a strenuous workout), and helps to relieve the pain and discomfort associated with muscle tension, fractures, sprains, sciatica, and stiff joints.

Massage therapy aids in the relief of muscle spasms and cramping and helps in the prevention of muscular atrophy. Massage therapy also helps break up scar tissue and is especially useful in the breakup of post surgical adhesions and edema. It promotes a greater range of motion in joints and keeps ligaments and tendons supple. It lowers blood pressure and heart rate and reduces stress, anxiety, and even depression. As massage helps reduce not only physical, but mental stress, it is often recommended as part of a regular program for stress management.

Migraine sufferers, elderly persons, and pregnant mothers, may find massage particularly beneficial. Headache pain is often caused by myofascial trigger points in the muscles of the neck. A massage therapist can press his or her fingers deeply into the knotted muscles on the neck of a client suffering from a headache in order to release the trigger points that are causing the pain and tension. As the senior population rises and people continue to live longer, massage offers a way for elderly persons to deal with some of the issues associated with old age, such as arthritis, tendonitis, and bursitis. Massage provides a natural means of joint lubrication through improved circulation and mobility and it causes the body to release endorphins that act as natural pain killers. Massage helps relieve many of the normal discomforts that a mother experiences during pregnancy, such as back, neck, and leg pain, as well as the pain and discomfort brought about by swollen feet and ankles.

As the elderly suffer disproportionately from immobility issues, massage therapy may be the only source of exercise they receive.

Where will my massage session take place?
Your massage or bodywork session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music may be played to help you relax. You will lie on a table especially designed for your comfort.

What do I wear during the massage?
You may or may not need to undress. For a full body massage, most people undress completely. However, you may choose to wear underwear. I will give you privacy to undress, and you will be covered with a sheet and blanket at all times except the area being worked on. Or you may go with out a sheet.

What do I do during a massage therapy treatment?
Make yourself comfortable. If I want you to adjust your position, I will either move you or will ask you to move what is needed. Otherwise, change your position anytime to make yourself more comfortable. Many people close their eyes and relax completely during a session; others prefer to talk. It's up to you. It is your massage, and whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax.

How will a massage feel?
It usually depends on the techniques used. Many massage therapists use a form of Swedish massage, which is often a baseline for practitioners. In a general Swedish massage, your session may start with broad, flowing strokes (effleurage) that will help calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension. As your body becomes relaxed, pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve areas of muscular tension. Often, a light oil or lotion is used to allow your muscles to be massaged without causing excessive friction to the skin. Do not hesitate to ask questions or mention if you feel any discomfort so that I can use another approach or technique.

Will the massage oils used make me breakout?
I use hypoallergenic massage oils or lotions. However, if you have sensitivity to certain types of oils or lotion please bring it to my attention. I have an assortment of oils and lotions on hand.

How long will a massage treatment last?
The average full-body massage treatment lasts approximately one hour. A half-hour appointment only allows time for a partial massage session, such as neck and shoulders, back or legs and feet. Many people prefer a 60-minute session for optimal relaxation. Always allow relaxation time prior to and after the session.

How will I feel after the massage therapy treatment?
Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days. Since toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage, it is recommended you drink plenty of water following your massage. I sometimes recommend a hot Epsom salt bath that encourages the release of toxins that may have been stirred up from the massage treatment.
